Bratislava - Grössling City Bath and Libary

As the former Pozsony Baths are a mixture of different layers left over from different ages we felt our task was to respectfully clean and reorganize the values hidden behind the unworthy conditions the historic buildings were left in.

The new functional mixture of library and bath require radical changes while we must also respect the heritage of the former institution and architecture. Thus our approach focuses on the potential of the existing conditions and how we can transform these spaces with new characteristics while evoking the atmosphere of the original experience. When this meant making the original entrance barrier free, creating a better connected layout in the historic buildings or opening the space above the new pool we took the liberty to prefer the elegance and the conceptual aspects of the original architecture rather than the status quo of the pre-existing space.

The complex hides within the city as a secret place, disguised by classical and modernist facades. This romantic character is important for us to keep but we shall also be able to tie the new functions stronger into the life of the city while easy navigation through the interiors is important for the visitors. To create the feeling of a labyrinth, getting lost and immersion within a clean interior layout we were focusing on creating a handful of different experiences. New characters complement and extend historic restorations. Our best tool for such interventions is the new roof over the inner court where we can play with the light painting the restored interior.

The new layout is simple and straightforward. The main entrance is kept in the corner in its original place. We can access the café in the northern wing, the interactive library in the western or find the entrance to the changing rooms on the first floor. The bath premises are separated on the first floor with the interactive and outdoor areas to the east and the resting zone to the west. Reading areas of the library are occupying the attic. The modernist building is designated for operational facilities and alternative entrance for the swimming pool. The roofs and the eastern courtyard are outdoor areas of the bath, and the western courtyard is connected to the library as an open garden accessible from the city.

To enhance these connections the small square along Medená is occupied by the terrace of the café, a new playground and recreational areas for locals instead of traffic and parking. We also propose to close Kúpeľná from crossing traffic so pedestrian connections between the city and the Danube are enhanced, while the arcades could be revived with terraces of new cafés and restaurants. Then the historic building would open to the corner of a pedestrian only zone inviting locals and tourists as well.

Welcome to Grössling!
